“I don’t want to compare to people who are doing worse than me.” That was a younger version of me. I’d look at how (I assumed) my friends and colleagues were doing, dismiss the ones who were less successful than me, and then feel bad that I wasn’t doing as well as the rest.

There are so many problems with that attitude, not the least of which is trying to define success. For some it’s money, for others power or fame. And for some it’s all a matter of perception. To them, the only success is that others view them as successful.

There are undoubtedly people I know who have more than I do, and undoubtedly some who have less. Some are happy with their lives, others are not. Some are healthier. Some are stronger or faster or smarter or better writers or…

It doesn’t matter. I have a good job, family and friends who love me, a roof over my head, and enough (often too much) to eat. And, as I write this, I’m looking forward to spending the week with my two adorable grandsons. If that isn’t success, I don’t know what is.
